Archibald Addison McMillan

Archie was born 4th child of six to Archibald and Ellen (Kennedy) McMillan in the Mount Forest area of Ontario, Canada. In 1887 he immigrated to the United States and lived in Wisconsin prior to moving to South Dakota. After his marriage to Edith (Keeling) on 2/28/1910, they lived in the Vermillion area and eventually moved to Brookings where he worked for Sharp Jewelry as an optometrist. In 1916 he purchased the business and established McMillan’s Jewelry and Music Store.
Archie and Edith had four children, Wilford, Robert, Eleanor, and (James) Donald. Archie continued his work as an optometrist after the closing of the jewelry and music store and finally retired in 1971. His interests included photography, hunting, and he was a voluntary weather observer for 35 years, a past High Priest of the Royal Arch Masons, and commander of Brookings Commandry No.14, Knights Templar. He passed away at the home of his daughter, Eleanor, in Reno, NV at the age of 96.
