B. Lucille (Engel) McMillan

Bertha Lucille Engel was born on October 17, 1914 as the fifth of eight children to Arthur J. and Bessie (Tierney) Engel. Lucille received her education in Brookings County, SD and worked at various domestic jobs and cafes around Brookings. She married Wilford A. “Mac” McMillan on April 14, 1937 in Clear Lake, SD. Together they owned and operated “The Messenger” and raised three daughters, Joanne, Patricia, and Mary Lou. In 1973, after Mac’s death, she sold The Messenger but continued to work for the new owners for the next three years before retiring in 1976.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Brookings, a long-time member of the VFW Auxiliary where she served as treasurer for six years. She was also a member and past president of the Brookings Business and Professional Women. In 1994 she moved to Brookview Manor due to declining health.
(Survivors at the time of passing): She was survived by her daughters Joanne (Delbert) Robbins and Mary Lou (Gary) Christensen, 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and four of her brothers. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, daughter Patricia (Alan) Raabe, two brothers and one sister.
