John Franklin Fish
John was born on December 29, 1896 (though other records list it as 1895), to Charles and Hannah (Dempster) Fish. He was one of 8 boys and two sisters. He was born in White, SD and moved around quite a bit going from Lake Preston to Kranzburg, Brookiings, Lake Preston and back to White. He joined the armed forces during WWI on July 21, 1918 and served in Company E of the 2nd Infantry. His service ended on February 4, 1919 and he returned back to South Dakota.
John married Myra Anzonetta Stinehart and they lived in Codington County. He later married Myrtle Elner Ruehl and they lived in the White, SD area. He was the father to 3 girls and 2 boys. John was a carpenter and a brick layer until his health forced him to stop. His wife Myrtle worked at the White Leader until her death. John died on May 30, 1969.

World War I
When war broke out, the 2nd Infantry Regiment was on security duty in the Hawaiian Islands guarding interned German ships and sailors, as well as various U.S. installations. In July 1918, it returned to the United States and was assigned to the 19th Division at Camp Dodge, Iowa. The war ended just as the regiment was about to deploy to France.
