Edmund A King
June 30, 1895 - May 8, 1965

​Edmund August King was born on June 30, 1893, in White, South Dakota, to Caroline A (Schulz), age 21, and August Konig King, age 29. Siblings Esther and Frederick followed in 1895 and 1897. Twins Minn and Ann were born in 1900 and then another sister, Florence, was born in 1904. Finally, when Edmund was 15 years old, Vern Henry was born (1908).

On June 5, 1917 Edmund, 23 years old and single, registered for the draft into WWI. He was stationed with the 163rd Depot Brigade in Camp Dodge, Iowa.

At the end of the war, he returned to the White, SD area where he met and married Lila Mae French on July 21, 1920. They both held various jobs around town and eventually managed the Palace Hotel.

Edmund died on May 8, 1965.

163rd Depot Brigade

The 163 Brigade was at Camp Dodge in April 1918.

Camp Dodge is a military installation in the city of Johnston, Iowa.

The role of depot brigades was to receive and organize recruits, provide them with uniforms, equipment and initial military training, and then send them to France to fight on the front lines. The depot brigades also received soldiers returning home at the end of the war and completed their out processing and discharges.
