Marilyn Joann (Hippen) Murphy

Marilyn Hippen was born on October 25, 1937 to Lavern and Audrey (Lineback) Hippen in Parker, South Dakota. She grew up in the Viborg, SD until her family briefly moved to Chicago, IL where her father was stationed while in the Navy. The family returned to South Dakota and Marilyn graduated from Irene High School in 1955. She then attended Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls and worked for Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton and then as a secretary for the South Branch Bank in Sioux Falls. During this time, she met Dale F. Murphy and the two married on March 23, 1957 in Luverne, Minnesota. They lived in the Sioux Falls until the following September and then moved to the Murphy family farm five miles east of White, SD in Sherman Township.
Dale and Marilyn raised all eight of their children (daughters: Teresa, Tamara, and Tracia and sons: Timothy, Thomas, Todd, Troy, and Tony) on the farm and Marilyn split her time being a full-time mom with supporting the family farming business and being involved in many civic, community and volunteer activities. She served as treasurer for the White Community Club (29 years), past-president of the American Legion Auxiliary and also was the Bloodmobile Coordinator for White, SD. She was a member of the Volunteer Service Bank, the Senior Health Information and Insurance Education Program, the Go-Getters Extension Club, the White Pioneer Days Committee and was very active in St. Paul’s Catholic Church of White, SD.
Marilyn enjoyed shopping, volunteering, traveling and crossword puzzles. She especially enjoyed spoiling her 26 grandchildren (13 boys and 13 girls (at time of passing)).
(Survivors at the time of death): Survivors include her husband Dale F. of White; her eight children (daughters Tess (Gary) Emmett, Tam (Dirk) Byers, and Tracia (Mark) Hogue (all of White, SD area) and sons: Tim (Shelly), Tom (Julie), Todd (Brie), Troy (Barbara) (all from White, SD area) and Tony of Gainesville, FL); twenty-six grandchildren; two sisters: Betty (Mike) Klopf of Madison, SD and Janet (Kerry) Lutter of Beresford, SD; and her mother-in-law, Edna Murphy; brothers-in-law: Dick (Marilyn) of Wakefield, RI; Robert (Carol) of Sioux Falls, SD; Mike of Charlotte, NC; and David (Gwen) of Buxton, NC; sisters-in-law: Mary (Leo) Plut of Litchfield, MN and Nila (Barry) Meyer of White, SD; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Larry.
