Born in August of 1831, to Jacob Alexander Montgomery and Ingaby (Hunt) Montgomery as one of 10 children. Their family moved from Ohio to Illinois (per 1950 census) and then to Wisconsin in the 1860’s where George joined the Union forces on August 14, 1862 with the 5th Wisconsin Infantry. He was transferred from Company K to Company E where, on November 7, 1863, he was involved in the 2nd Battle of Rappahannock Station in Virginia. In this campaign the Union forces, led by Maj. General John Sedgwick, re-captured a bridgehead held by the Confederates forces led by Maj. General Jubal Early as part of the Bristoe Campaign. In July of 1864, George was transferred to Co. B, Indiana Battery where he finished out his service.
After the war, George migrated to Wabasha, of Gillford Township, Minnesota. On June 17, 1876, he was united in marriage to Delana Della Herndon. Together, along with their five children, they moved from Minnesota to the village of White in Brookings County, South Dakota. George recorded his occupation as Farmer in the 1880 census. George lived and farmed around White, SD until his death on November 3, 1922 where he was interred in Fairview Cemetery
