Frederick F. SteinBack
Frederick Frank Steinback was born on November 11, 1896, in White, South Dakota, to Bertha Anna Helene Paepke, age 26, and John Ernst Steinbeck, age 33. He had 8 siblings join him as he grew up in the White, SD area.
His military draft registration is noted on June 5, 1917 where he eventually was provided his draft number on July 4, 1918 (#24). When his number was called on August 6, 1918, he joined the armed forces in the 434 Co. L, 62nd Infantry. As part of the 62nd infantry, his regiment was on its way to France when the armistice was reached that ended the war.
After the war, he returned to White and eventually married Ruth Wilaby on October 28, 1920. They moved to Brookings, SD in 1954 where he was employed by South Dakota State University until he retired in 1964. His family remained in the area and upon his death in 1973, two brothers and two sisters were still in the area as survivors.

62nd Infantry in WWI
The 62nd Infantry Regiment was constituted in the Regular Army on 15 May 1917, and was organized on 1 June 1917 at the Presidio of San Francisco, California, from personnel of the 12th Infantry Regiment. It was assigned to the 15th Infantry Brigade, 8th Division, stationed at Camp Fremont, California, on 17 December 1917. The regiment was initially commanded by Colonel James R. Lindsay, who served until October 1918, when he was promoted to brigadier general and assigned to command the 97th Division. The regiment departed Camp Fremont on 18 October 1918 with elements of the 15th Infantry Brigade for movement to Camp Mills, New York and then movement overseas to France. The regiment was at sea when it received news of the armistice that ended the war. The 8th Division was demobilized on 5 September 1919 at Camp Dix, New Jersey.
