When George Henry Walrath was born on April 2, 1842, in Jefferson, New York, his father, Sylvester, was 22 and his mother, Lutheria, was 22. He gained a sister, Maryett, in 1844, but his mother and Maryett both perished in 1845. His father remarried and his second wife, Grace (Sperry), had 5 children together.
George enlisted into Co. K 5th Battalion, New York Volunteer Artillery in 1862 and served throughout the remainder of the war. He married Amanda Sayles on February 21, 1864 in Redwood, New York while on furlough. George was discharged from the service on the 26th of June, 1865 at Harper's Ferry, VA.
George and Amanda had five children in 16 years (Ida Mae, George, Ella Ada, Etta Elvira, and Ruby). Around 1878 they moved west to Minnesota and then on to Elkton, SD where they homesteaded. They then moved to White, SD around 1910 where he was a regular church attendant. He died on July 21, 1916, in at the age of 74, and was buried in White, South Dakota.
