Born in Rock Island, Illinois, James Warner was born on October 2, 1841 to parents Ernest (1812) and Louisa (Fray) (1815). Two more brothers would join James (John in 1842 and George in 1850) before their mother and and infant brother Edwin would die on September 2, 1852. By this time, the Warner family was living in Massachusetts and it was there, on August 19, 1864, that James joined the Union Army with Co. G, 4th Regiment US Artillery.
After the war, James has moved on to Wisconsin where he meets and marries Miss Margarette J. DeGraff around 1866. Their first child, a girl named Louise Adelle, was born in May of 1867. Their son, John Wesley, was born in 1869, another daughter, Lottie May, in 1872, and a son, Ernest Augustus was born in 1878. Three more sons were born, James W., John, and Peter between 1885 and 1891. The family then moved on to the White, South Dakota area where James would pass away on April 4, 1900.
